Over the past 12 months, I’ve experienced a lot of stress in my personal life.  The emotional roller coaster of caring for sick family members compounded with the stress of my court reporting career was taking a toll on my mental and physical health.  I needed to figure out ways to cope with life…and my career.  The solutions I came up with have begun to serve me well…

Personal issues aside, court reporting is such a demanding profession and can have a pretty intense level of stress, along with the fact that I’m now 51 years old, so there were several things I had to change or add to my routine in order to take better care of myself and to feel good and healthy.

One of the things that happened with me because of all the stress is lack of sleep.  I either had trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.  I’ve started using the sound of ocean waves or “white noise” to help me sleep, and it has done wonders.  I use my iPad/YouTube.

Another thing I did was change my eating habits.  I already eat pretty healthy, but I started having what I call a “brain blaster” smoothie every morning.  I invested in a NutriBullet (best $99 I’ve spent in a long time).  If you’re like me, you have a pretty busy morning routine.  NutriBullet has to-go cups with lids.  I just take my breakfast in the car and sip it on the way.  Plus, it won’t spill, so you can tuck it in your briefcase if you have to.

I’ve also changed my exercise routine.  This has taken me a long time.  I did Bikram yoga for 12 years.  I needed a change, so I joined Life Time and tried spinning and yoga classes there.  I finally found a new home at Heat Yoga, and I love it!  It’s totally different than Bikram and uses whole new muscle groups.  They have a class called Yoga Sculpt that kicks my butt!  And of course, the room is heated, but not the intense level of Bikram.  It’s around 90° versus 105° with 40% humidity.  Changing your exercise routine can really change how you feel for the better!

I also started taking a calcium/vitamin D supplement (Metagenics), along with Body One MSM and liquid supplement.  I buy all of it online, and it’s much less expensive than buying it at a store.  It’s amazing how my mind seems clearer and more focused.

Last but not least, I’ve been doing a detox every three to six months.  Check out “On the Highway to Health” on Facebook.  Chris Delacruz is a health coach and someone I went to high school with.  She’s helped me so much, and is very affordable.

My next goal is meditation on a regular basis.  I really want to learn how to calm all of my senses at once and be totally relaxed.  I’d still like to pass the rest of my RPR, and I know this is something, along with practicing, that will help me reach that goal.
