Why Not Caption Your Next Event?

by admin on May 28, 2014

ADARA Conference“Every Word Heard.”   That’s our mantra at Paradigm Court Reporting & Captioning.

In America, one out of five people suffer from hearing loss that varies from mild, moderate, severe to profound – that’s 20% of the population!  This widespread disability prevents people from hearing every word being spoken.   Depending on venue and circumstances, the result to the Deaf / Hard-of-Hearing community ranges from frustration to danger due to their inability to hear important or desired information.

Providing captioning accommodations at an event allows for everyone in attendance to have the same experience and equal access to the information being shared.

  •  STADIUM CAPTIONING is now standard in all newly constructed ballparks and arenas, as anything being announced for the entertainment of the hearing crowd would also be appreciated by the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing fans as well.  But more importantly, in the event of an emergency, how else will those fans know what’s going on or what instructions need to be followed?
  • GALA CAPTIONING, including the live auction, is now on the rise, for obvious reasons:   The statistical 20% in the audience with hearing loss includes some of the organization’s largest benefactors!   Because most adults with latent hearing loss will not ask for this accommodation, they are simply thrilled when it is provided by the organization proactively.
  •  KEYNOTE CAPTIONING ensures that every word spoken by the Honored Speaker is heard by all—Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing… even those with normal hearing battling an acoustically challenged venue.
  • CONVENTION CAPTIONING provides attendees the benefit of every word being heard.  The bigger the space and the more in attendance, the greater the benefit and value.

Proactively providing captioning for sporting events, appreciation dinners, fund raisers and lectures and the like sends the message that your organization recognizes the widespread need for every word being heard by all present and demonstrates a willingness to provide that equal access to information.

When captioning is not provided proactively, there is an obligation to provide the accommodation upon request, as per the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.   (Click here to learn more from the National Association of the Deaf.)

When it comes to finding the right company to provide captioning for your event, the two most important hallmarks that help ensure quality and accuracy are the experience and credentials of the CART Captioner.
