Minneapolis, MN: Sunday, March 2nd marked the Dalai Lama’s first Tibetan New Year’s celebration in the western hemisphere, and he did so in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nearly 3,000 Tibetan-Americans from across the country gathered at Augsburg College to celebrate the traditional ceremony in Tibetan.
Prior to the New Year’s celebration, His Holiness delivered a speech in English at Macalester College in St. Paul entitled, “The Nature of Happiness, Fulfillment, and Embodiment.” Paradigm court reporter and captioner Lisa Richardson was on-hand to capture every inspiring word.
Lisa described the event as a thrill and an honor. “The Dalai Lama is delightful and has a great sense of humor. I was nervous as he can be difficult to understand,” she explained. “I prepared for the job by watching and practicing to some videos including the webcast of the event held at the Convention Center on Saturday. That really helped me become familiar with his way of speaking and his accent.”
At a few points during his speech, the Dalai Lama lapsed into Tibetan. At which point, Lisa wrote [Translating] on the screen. The interpreter would than translate to English, and she would then caption the translation.
Paradigm was proud to caption and provide equal communication access to all attendees of Macalester’s event featuring the Dalai Lama.
